What you'll do:
The Underwriter position underwrites residential loans ensuring compliance with appropriate company, secondary market Investor standards, and all applicable laws. Examines loan documentation for accuracy and completeness. Partners with Loan Originators, Executive Management, Loan Coordinators, Loan Officer Assistants and Processors to secure all required documents.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Follows prescribed guidelines and receives and reviews loan applications and associated documentation to ensure thoroughness and accuracy
- Verifies all loan-level information for accuracy and completeness
- Thoroughly analyzes credit reports and appraisals for compliance with all Company and investor requirements and guidelines
- Maintains acceptable turnaround times for applications submitted for pre-approval and funding packages
- Interacts with Quality Control, Compliance, and Funding for problem resolution, risk evaluation and compliance concerns
- Develops and maintains an up-to-date and sound knowledge of multiple loan product guidelines offered by the company and various risk assessment tools used to decision mortgage loans
- Reworks loans to new terms and identifies additional conditions as needed to insure a viable credit decision
- Reviews and evaluates borrower(s) profile including but not limited to all income documentation, tax returns, credit reports, preliminary report, judgments, bankruptcy documents and appraisals, ensuring all necessary documentation is requested to support final loan decisions
- Exercises good judgment, conducts reasonableness tests and issues quality decisions
- Determines accuracy and completeness of files; ensures processes are consistent
- Demonstrates proficiency in automated underwriting systems
- Maintains a sound knowledge of secondary market activity, practices, and business/industry practices as they impact underwriting quality and origination activity
- Communicates regularly with Loan Originators, Management, Processors and other office personnel
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Solid knowledge and understanding of FHA\VA\USDA, FNMA and FHLMC policies and guidelines
- Knowledge and understanding of mortgage loan processing, compliance, investor products and underwriting guidelines
- Solid knowledge and understanding of mortgage insurance (MI) guidelines, various fraud tools, processing and closing functions, and the entire real estate lending process.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Minimum of 3+ years of recent residential loan underwriting experience required
- DE certification required and recent FHA underwriting experience preferred
- Secondary market experience preferred
- VA SAR/LAPP experience preferred but not necessary
- Demonstrated experience with repurchase response and/or rebuttal review and response preparation
- Demonstrated experience working with DU and LP
- Demonstrated experience researching information, problem solving, and making solid business decisions
- Demonstrated experience reporting, analyzing, interpreting, and critical thinking
- Demonstrated experience effectively managing relationships with internal and external partners
- Demonstrated experience working in a fast paced and changing environment
- Demonstrated experience with attention to detail, written and oral communication, multi-tasking, and working in a team atmosphere adhering to tight deadlines
- Demonstrated experience with MS Office software products
